Phyllanthus emblica L (Phyllanthaceae), locally termed as amla or Indian gooseberry, is an extraordinary commonly used herb in Indian Ayurvedic systems. It is known by the common name âthe King of Rasyanaâ due to its spectacular renewal, revitalization, and reconstructive capacities. P. emblica also contains various phenolics such as tannins, rutin, phyllembelic acid, phyllembelin curcum-inoids, and emblicol, among others. The whole plant (all parts) can be employed for medicinal purposes, particularly the fruit, which has been used in Ayurveda as a potent rejuvenating agent, the so-called Rasayana. Its fruit has also been used in traditional medicine for the treatment of jaundice, diarrhea, and inflammation. Furthermore, various plant parts have shown antibacterial, antioxidant, antidiabetic, hypolipidemic, antiulcerogenic, gastroprotective, hepatoprotective, and chemopreventive properties (1, 2).
