Withania somnifera, popularly known as Ashwagandha is widely considered as the Indian ginseng. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a Rasayana (rejuvenation) and expected to promote physical and mental health, rejuvenate the body in debilitated conditions, and increase longevity (1).
Research reports based largely on preclinical studies as well as few clinical trials have highlighted the beneficial effect of Ashwagandha on improving an individual’s resistance towards stress and thereby improving self-assessed quality of life (2). Ashwagandha also has an ameliorative effect on the strength and function of the brain and nervous system. It also improves the sexual performance and function of the reproductive system promoting healthy life. Ashwagandha improves the bodyâs defense against disease by improving cell-mediated immunity. It has been reported for its potent antioxidant properties that help protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals. Ashwagandha has hepatoprotective property, which raises haemoglobin level and red blood cell count and improves energy level (3).
