Symplocos racemosa contains many phytochemicals with various activities indicated in the traditional system of medicines like Ayurveda and Unani. The majority of the reports indicated the usefulness of the stem bark for the treatment of gynaecological disorders, fever, inflammation, and liver disorders. Several flavonol glucosides like symplocoside, symposide, leucopelargonidine-3 glucoside, ellagic acid, rhamnetin 3-digalactoside, triterpenoids like 19 α-hydroxyasiatic acid-3, 28-O-bis-β-glucopyranosides, betulin, linoleic acid, β-sitosterol and α-amyrin and alkaloids like loturine, loturidine, colloturine and harmine have been ascribed as chief bioactives from the plant (1).

Recent reports on S. racemosa have focused on anticancer, antibacterial, analgesic & anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antiandrogenic and antiulcer activity ascribed to the presence of phenolic glycosides, flavonoids, steroids and triterpenoids (2).
