Shilajeet also known in the north of India as salajit, shilajatu, mimie, or mummiyo is a blackish-brown powder or an exudate from high mountain rocks, especially in the Himalayans mountains between India and Nepal. Shilajeet has been known and used for centuries by the Ayurvedic medicine, as a rejuvenator and as antiaging compound. According to Indian traditional knowledge, shilajeet exerts action as a tonic, laxative, expectorant, diuretic, immune-modulator, lithotriptic, and antihypertensive when given internally, and it acts as antiseptic, analgesic, and germicide when applied externally. Shilajeet is given along with milk to control diabetes and to treat fractures. Several animal studies have shown that shilajit exhibits antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, adaptogenic, and antidyslipidemic activities (1).
